Three routes

Drives

Anyone can hand you a car and a map. These are routes we drive ourselves, timed around traffic and light, with the dull parts engineered out.

The Evenlode

The Evenlode exists because a member asked whether it was possible to do something worthwhile with a car and still be back in London for lunch. It is. You leave Motcomb Street at half past five, you are on the good roads by seven, and the whole thing is over before most people have finished breakfast.

One day 140 miles March to October

We would take the Reiter R9, Castellan Ravenscourt.

The route, day by day

The Bealach

Three days in the north west, built around one road. The Bealach na Ba climbs 626 metres in six miles with hairpins that were laid out for cattle, and it is the closest thing Britain has to an alpine pass. Everything either side of it is chosen to be worth the drive north.

We would take the Castellan Ravenscourt, Castellan Windrose.

The route, day by day

Route Napoleon

Five days from the Alps down to the coast, following the road Napoleon took north in 1815 in the opposite direction and considerably faster. Three high passes, one gorge that people fly to see, and a final morning that ends with the car parked above Cannes.
