The Bealach

Three days 480 miles May to September

The hardest road in Britain, and the emptiest.

Three days in the north west, built around one road. The Bealach na Ba climbs 626 metres in six miles with hairpins that were laid out for cattle, and it is the closest thing Britain has to an alpine pass. Everything either side of it is chosen to be worth the drive north.

The route

01Day

Inverness to Torridon, 96 miles

West into the light

A short first day on purpose. Out of Inverness on the A835, past Loch Garve, then the long descent to Kinlochewe with the Torridon hills rising ahead of you. Arrive early, walk for an hour, eat well. The driving starts properly tomorrow.

02Day

Torridon to Applecross and back, 118 miles

The Bealach

The pass itself, twice, because doing it once is a waste of a long journey. Six miles up with three hairpins that need a full lock and a deep breath, then the summit and a view across to Skye that is either the best in Britain or completely hidden in cloud. Both are worth seeing.

03Day

Loch Carron to Glencoe, 154 miles

South through the glens

Down the west coast on roads that follow every inlet, through Shiel Bridge and along Loch Lochy, and finally into Glencoe with the light going flat and the walls of the glen closing in. We meet you at the hotel and take the car home.

We transport the car to Inverness and collect it from Glencoe, so the 500 miles of motorway at either end are not your problem.
