The Evenlode
Out before six, home before the traffic.
The Evenlode exists because a member asked whether it was possible to do something worthwhile with a car and still be back in London for lunch. It is. You leave Motcomb Street at half past five, you are on the good roads by seven, and the whole thing is over before most people have finished breakfast.
The route
Belgravia to Burford
The empty hour
Out through Hyde Park Corner while the city is still deciding whether to wake up, onto the A40 and west. This part is not the point, but at that hour it is quiet enough to be pleasant, and you will be at the top of Burford High Street before the shops open.
Burford to Northleach
Drystone country
The B4425 is the reason for the whole exercise. Twelve miles of open, sighted, beautifully surfaced road between honey coloured walls, with almost nothing on it before eight. Third gear, occasionally fourth, and no need to go anywhere near a licence.
Bibury and the Coln valley
Breakfast, then the slow part
Down into the Coln valley for breakfast at a pub that starts serving at eight and does not mind muddy boots or expensive cars. Afterwards the valley road runs narrow and shaded for nine miles, which is the part everyone photographs.
Evenlode to home
The long way back
North to pick up the Evenlode itself, then east on roads that get progressively duller until you rejoin the motorway near Oxford. You will be back in Belgravia by two, and you will have covered 140 miles that felt like more.
What we would take
Any of the nine will do it. These two will do it best.
Castellan Ravenscourt
The one we would take across France.
The Evenlode, when it suits you
Tell us a month and we will find the weekend with the best chance of weather and the least chance of traffic.
