THE SHAPE OF THE TRIP · 3 DAYS

The itinerary

DAY 1

Malham's amphitheatre

From Settle over the scars to Malham: the dry valley of Watlowes, the pavement above the Cove where Harry Potter camped and harebells actually live, Gordale Scar's slot, and Janet's Foss for a cold plunge nobody regrets for more than a minute.

DAY 2

Pen-y-ghent the back way

Up the crouching-lion profile of Pen-y-ghent, 694m, by its gentler southern nose, descending past Hull Pot — a collapsed cavern you could lose a church in — to Horton and onward by beckside paths to the inn at Chapel-le-Dale.

DAY 3

Ingleborough

The summit day: past the mouth of Gaping Gill, where a beck falls the height of St Paul's into the dark, up to Ingleborough's flat fort-topped summit at 723m, and down the pavement staircases to Ingleton. Tea, train, home by supper.

WHY THIS ROUTE

The expedition

The Dales do their business in white stone: pavements cracked into grykes that hide entire botanical gardens, becks that vanish mid-field and reappear a valley later, and the great curved wall of Malham Cove, built by a waterfall bigger than Niagara that no living thing ever saw. This is a weekend-plus for walkers who like their landscapes explained — our guides carry the geological story alongside the flapjack — and it finishes over Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent by lines that dodge the Three Peaks processions. Nights in village pubs with open fires and opinions about gravy. Honest note: the going is easy underfoot by our standards, but limestone is lethal when wet and the two summit days still earn their dinner.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Malham Cove and its clints-and-grykes pavement
  • Gaping Gill winch weekend when dates align
  • Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent without the queues
  • Proper Dales pubs both nights
  • The geology masterclass version of a walking weekend
  • Trains to the start: Settle–Carlisle line

STRAIGHT ANSWER

Is this for you?

You should be able to say yes — honestly — to all of these:

  • You walk regularly and are comfortable with days of up to five hours on good but sometimes rough ground.
  • You would rather be told the truth about a hard day than sold an easy one.

Grade 2 means grade 2. If you're not sure, ring us — we'd rather lose a booking than carry a struggle.
