Four days through the loveliest glen in Scotland: ancient Caledonian pines, a night at the remotest hostel in Britain, and a grand finish beneath the Five Sisters of Kintail. Low-level, big-country walking.

The itinerary
Into the pines
From Cannich along Loch Affric among the granny pines — the glen at its postcard best, which the postcards undersell. Day two leaves the trees behind and walks up the ever-narrowing glen to Alltbeithe hostel, where the generator hum is the only modern sound.
The watershed
A shorter day over the pass at 410m — the spine of Scotland at its lowest, gentlest point — with an optional out-and-back to the Falls of Glomach, one of Britain's highest waterfalls, hidden in a slot gorge that swallows sound.
Gleann Lichd to the sea
The reward day: down the great grass corridor of Gleann Lichd with the Five Sisters rising a kilometre overhead, to Morvich and the salt water of Loch Duich. Celebration dinner in Kintail; transfers back east next morning.
WHY THIS ROUTE
The expedition
Glen Affric holds the best of what the Highlands used to be: granny pines three centuries old, black lochs, and a right-of-way running clean through the mountains to the west coast. This is deliberate grade-2 country — good paths, no summits, days of five to six hours — but it is not tame. The middle night is spent at Alltbeithe, a hostel eight miles from the nearest road, lit by gas and candles, where the warden's cake supply is a matter of legend. The final day descends Gleann Lichd beneath the Five Sisters with the sea ahead. Honest note: distances are honest and the weather is Highland; bring waterproofs you trust and expect one boggy stretch that finds everyone's boot limit.
