The Rough Bounds: no road in, one pub, a bothy night and Ladhar Bheinn — the finest sea-to-summit hill day in Britain. Three days, a boat from Mallaig, and the trip we recommend to almost everyone first.

The itinerary
Morning boat from Mallaig to Inverie, then over the Mam Barrisdale, 450m, and down long views of Loch Hourn to the bothy on Barrisdale Bay. Driftwood fire if we're lucky, candles either way.
The big one: Coire Dhorrcail's horseshoe onto Ladhar Bheinn, 1,020m, sea on three sides from the summit ridge. A full mountain day from sea level, with the bothy kettle waiting at the bottom.
Back across the peninsula by the old stalkers' pass at 550m, dropping through birch woods to Inverie. Pint at The Old Forge, afternoon boat, trains south from Mallaig. Nobody wants to leave.
WHY THIS ROUTE
The expedition
Knoydart behaves like an island: you arrive by boat, the phone dies at the pier, and the peninsula arranges itself around three big rough hills and two sea lochs. This is our shortest expedition and our most repeated one. Day one crosses the Mam Barrisdale to a bothy on the bay; day two climbs Ladhar Bheinn, 1,020m, by the Coire Dhorrcail horseshoe — sea on three sides from the summit, weather permitting, which it frequently is not; day three walks back out over the Mam Meadail in time for a pint at Britain's most remote mainland pub and the afternoon boat. Honest note: there is no scrambling and no altitude, but the days are long, the ground is wet and rough, and your rucksack carries two nights.

STRAIGHT ANSWER
Is this for you?
You should be able to say yes — honestly — to all of these:
- You walk regularly and are comfortable with days of up to five hours on good but sometimes rough ground.
- You are happy in a tent, in weather, with no shower and an early kettle.
- You would rather be told the truth about a hard day than sold an easy one.
Grade 2 means grade 2. If you're not sure, ring us — we'd rather lose a booking than carry a struggle.
