The itinerary
Helvellyn and the eastern fells
From Keswick over the whaleback of the Dodds to Helvellyn, 950m, descending by Grisedale to Grasmere. Day two crosses the passes to Wasdale by Eskdale's granite slabs and one perfect tarn — a long approach that earns the biggest day.
The Scafells
Wasdale to Borrowdale over the roof of England: the Corridor Route onto Scafell Pike, 978m, with the crowds a distant rumour on the summit and gone entirely ten minutes off it. Descent past Sprinkling Tarn, the finest-sited sheet of water in the country.
Gable at dawn
Up before breakfast for Great Gable's sunrise — the Napes ridges silhouetted, Wast Water shining like poured metal — then back over Honister and Cat Bells to Keswick in time for the afternoon train. Short, sharp, unforgettable.

The expedition
This is the trip we walk out of our own front doors to lead. Four days linking the Lake District's three great mountain groups by its quieter lines — Helvellyn by its lonely eastern coves rather than the motorway path, Scafell Pike over the Corridor Route from Wasdale, Great Gable at dawn before anyone else is up. Nights are in valley inns at Grasmere, Wasdale and Borrowdale, which means light packs and heavy dinners. The point of the round is altitude of quality rather than quantity: every summit here has been climbed by people we can name since before mountaineering had a name. Honest note: Lakeland rain is a full member of the team; the itinerary flexes rather than cancels, and the pubs are excellent in all weathers.

You should be able to say yes — honestly — to all of these:
- You can walk six-to-seven-hour days on rough ground, back to back, and enjoy most of them.
- You would rather be told the truth about a hard day than sold an easy one.
