THE SHAPE OF THE TRIP · 5 DAYS

The itinerary

DAYS 1–2

Newgale to St David's

Big beach walking gives way to the buckled purple cliffs of St Bride's Bay. We round St David's Head where Ramsey's tide race hums offshore, and drop into Britain's smallest city for evensong, chips, or both — the cathedral floor has a six-hundred-year lean worth seeing.

DAYS 3–4

The empty north

The path's loneliest miles: Abereiddy's Blue Lagoon, the abandoned harbours of the slate trade, Strumble Head's lighthouse and a coast the road never reaches. The shorter fourth day offers coasteering with a local crew or an unhurried afternoon at Pwll Deri's clifftop hostel headland.

DAY 5

The Witches' Cauldron

The wildest finish on the path: contorted cliffs past Ceibwr Bay and the collapsed sea cave of the Witches' Cauldron, where the water glows green on the dullest day, ending at Poppit Sands with the Preseli hills behind. Train home from Cardigan's taxi rank.

WHY THIS ROUTE

The expedition

The Pembrokeshire coast path never rises above 175 metres and still manages 2,600 of ascent in five days — the cliffs see to that, dropping and climbing at every cove like a slow heartbeat. We walk the far west, from Newgale over St David's Head to Cardigan, the stretch where the path is emptiest and the geology loudest: folded cliffs, blowholes, sea stacks working loose over centuries. September brings seal pups to every second beach; spring brings puffins to Ramsey Sound's rips. Nights in coastal inns; luggage travels ahead. Honest note: grade 2 is for terrain, not effort — five consecutive 17km days with sea wind in your face is honest walking, and there is no shortcut once committed to a headland.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Seal pups on the September departures
  • St David's — smallest city, finest cathedral
  • The Blue Lagoon at Abereiddy
  • Choughs, peregrines and gannets from Grassholm
  • Inn-to-inn with luggage transfer
  • One deliberately short day with a coasteering option

STRAIGHT ANSWER

Is this for you?

You should be able to say yes — honestly — to all of these:

  • You walk regularly and are comfortable with days of up to five hours on good but sometimes rough ground.
  • You would rather be told the truth about a hard day than sold an easy one.

Grade 2 means grade 2. If you're not sure, ring us — we'd rather lose a booking than carry a struggle.
