THE SHAPE OF THE TRIP · 7 DAYS

The itinerary

DAYS 1–2

Kvikkjokk's forests

The launch across Saggat lake starts things properly, then two days in cathedral spruce forest and out onto the first fells, with a wild camp on the Tsielekjåhkå's gravel bars where the water runs glacier-grey.

DAYS 3–5

The high middle

Open fell walking on the rim of Sarek's weather, past the twin lakes at Vuonatjviken (rowing boats, house rules: always leave one on each shore), a night at the lonely Vindelkroken cabin, and the route's summit shoulder at 946m.

DAYS 6–7

Down to Ammarnäs

Long descending days through birch and bilberry into the Vindel river valley, finishing at Ammarnäs where the potato hill (a listed monument, genuinely) and the bakery compete for attention. Bus and sleeper train home.

WHY THIS ROUTE

The expedition

Everyone walks the northern Kungsleden; almost nobody walks this. The southern sections between Kvikkjokk and Ammarnäs carry a tenth of the traffic through country that is, if anything, wilder — primeval spruce forest where the moss swallows sound, high shoulders skirting the Sarek massif, and lake after lake crossed by rowing boat or the put-put of a Sámi ferryman's launch. Huts are smaller and further apart here, two nights are wild camps, and re-supply is a village shop that keeps its own hours. The reward is the Kungsleden as it was before the fame: reindeer, ptarmigan, and days when the only bootprints at the ford are the ones you leave. Honest note: solitude cuts both ways — this is remoter than the northern half and the grade assumes sound camp craft.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A tenth of the northern section's foot traffic
  • Five boat crossings — two rowed by you
  • Old-growth forest on the UNESCO Laponia fringe
  • Wild camps with Sarek's peaks on the skyline
  • Cloudberries in August, in indecent quantities
  • The bakery at Ammarnäs — worth seven days' walk

STRAIGHT ANSWER

Is this for you?

You should be able to say yes — honestly — to all of these:

  • You can walk six-to-seven-hour days on rough ground, back to back, and enjoy most of them.
  • You are happy in a tent, in weather, with no shower and an early kettle.
  • You would rather be told the truth about a hard day than sold an easy one.

Grade 3 means grade 3. If you're not sure, ring us — we'd rather lose a booking than carry a struggle.
