Fisherfield Six
The six remotest Munro-sized mountains in Scotland in one push: two wild camps deep in the Great Wilderness, a dawn river crossing, and summits most hillwalkers save for last. Carried camps, big rewards.
THE ROUTE, CHARTED
The elevation profile
GPS-logged. Camps and key points marked; the shape of the route is the honest version of the brochure.
THE SHAPE OF THE TRIP · 4 DAYS
The itinerary
The walk in
From Corrie Hallie over the moor track past Shenavall bothy, across the strath and up into the round's inner glen. Camp one goes up by Lochan Fada with the whole horseshoe arranged around the tent doors.
The six summits
Two summit days from the camps: Slioch's neighbours first — Beinn Tarsuinn, Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair, Sgùrr Bàn — then the crown: A' Mhaighdean and Ruadh Stac Mòr at dawn, with Fionn Loch a thousand metres below and the sea beyond.
Out by the strath
Break camp, recross the river (lower and warmer by afternoon, usually), pause at Shenavall to sign the book, and climb the last moor track back to the road. Fish and chips in Ullapool are traditional and non-negotiable.
WHY THIS ROUTE
The expedition
Fisherfield is called the Great Wilderness without irony: a horseshoe of six serious mountains so far from any road that climbing them demands you live among them. That is exactly what we do — walk in past Shenavall, camp twice in the heart of the round, and take the summits in a logical two-day sweep, including A' Mhaighdean, generally agreed to be the remotest Munro and the finest viewpoint in Scotland. The Abhainn Srath na Sealga crossing is done at dawn, barefoot or in crocs, thigh-deep after rain — it is the price of admission and everyone remembers it. Honest note: you carry camp and food for four days over rough, pathless sections; the grade is for load and commitment, not technical ground.
HIGHLIGHTS
- A' Mhaighdean — the remotest summit view in Scotland
- Two wild camps you will never better
- The dawn river crossing (cold, famous, safe)
- Six big summits in a single horseshoe
- No phone signal for four days — genuinely none
- Small print honesty: bring midge nets in July
STRAIGHT ANSWER
Is this for you?
You should be able to say yes — honestly — to all of these:
- You have real multi-day experience and can handle big consecutive days — this is honest grade 4 ground.
- You are happy in a tent, in weather, with no shower and an early kettle.
- You would rather be told the truth about a hard day than sold an easy one.
Grade 4 means grade 4. If you're not sure, ring us — we'd rather lose a booking than carry a struggle.
