The itinerary
Schynige Platte to Grindelwald
Start on the rack railway's limestone garden and walk the classic crest by the Faulhorn — a night at the old summit hotel — to the Bachalpsee's reflections and down to Grindelwald, with the Eiger's shadow arriving before the town does.
Kleine Scheidegg and the Sefinenfurgge
Under the north face itself at Kleine Scheidegg (telescope provided, vertigo optional), across the Lauterbrunnen valley's 72 waterfalls to car-free Mürren, then the shale ladders of the Sefinenfurgge, 2,612m, to the alp at Griesalp.
Hohtürli and the lakes
The crux and the crown: Hohtürli's endless staircase to the Blüemlisalphütte at 2,834m for the trip's wildest night, then down past the Oeschinensee's cliff-ringed blue to Kandersteg, finishing over the flower meadows of the Bunderchrinde.
WHY THIS ROUTE
The expedition
The Bernese Oberland stacks more ice against the sky than anywhere else in the Alps, and its footpaths are arranged like theatre seating. Our west-to-east traverse links the great balconies — Faulhorn, Schynige Platte's limestone gardens, the Sefinenfurgge's ladder-stitched shale — always with the triple wall of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau re-composing itself across the valley. Nights alternate berghaus and mountain hotel, including one at 2,681m where sunset and breakfast both come with a hundred kilometres of ice. The Hohtürli, 2,778m, is the hardest col: 600 vertical metres of staircase that the Swiss have, of course, actually built stairs into. Honest note: grade 4 for relentless up-and-down; the paths themselves are immaculate, which only encourages the route to climb more.
