The door is usually open when the lights are on. Coffee is decent, the route-planning table is enormous, and someone will happily talk you out of the wrong trip and into the right one.

Frequent questions, straight answers

Match yourself to the grade, not the photos. Grade 2 is fit hillwalking with days up to five hours. Grade 3 is sustained six-to-seven-hour days. Grade 4 means big days at altitude or under a full pack. A useful test: three consecutive big hill days at home, and you enjoyed the third one — that's grade 3, comfortably. Unsure? Ring us. We grade people as honestly as we grade routes, and we'd rather lose a booking than carry a struggle.

About 60% of our walkers book solo — it is the normal way to join a Wildtrace trip. Eight people sharing tents, huts and one very large pot of tea knit together fast. There's no single supplement on camping trips; where a hut charges for single rooms we pass on the cost only, listed before you book.

A £350 deposit holds your place on international trips (£100 on UK ones), fully refundable for 14 days while you think. The balance is due 10 weeks out. If we cancel — trips run from five bookings, decided 12 weeks ahead — you get everything back including the deposit. If you cancel, refunds follow a published sliding scale: 70% at 10 weeks, stepping down to 10% inside three weeks. Required travel insurance normally covers that gap.

Yes, and please do rather than panic-buying. Sleeping bags rated to −5°C: £30 a trip. Ice axe and crampons: £25 (included free on the Cairngorms course). Poles: £5. Boots are the exception — you must own them and break them in yourself, because hired boots ruin trips. Everything else on our kit list is deliberately ordinary; see the £38 base layer story.
