The founding story
Two engineers, one tin of receipts
In 2021, Arun Mehta and Kate Bellamy were engineers on an audit platform at a large accountancy firm — software that could reconcile a FTSE 100 balance sheet, priced accordingly. The same year, Kate’s sister opened a bakery in Walthamstow and did her books in a spreadsheet with a tin of receipts on top of the fridge.
The gap seemed absurd. The hardest bookkeeping problems — categorisation, matching, VAT — had been solved for big companies for a decade. Nobody had bothered to make the solving quiet, and cheap enough for a bakery.
So they left, rented a small office off Rivington Street, and spent eight months building the ledger they wished the bakery had. Ledgerly filed its first VAT return in March 2022. Today the team is about forty people, still in London, still answering support email themselves on Fridays.
